Until 1935, Rotterdammers were able to admire the collections of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and Museum Rotterdam in the Schielandshuis. That year, Museum Boymans opened a brand new building. Now that this city landmark at the Museumpark is undergoing a major renovation, iconic Rotterdam art and artefacts are reunited in Rotterdam’s Studio Secrets.
The exhibition spotlights six artists born in Rotterdam: Hendrick Sorgh, Pieter de Hooch, Nicolaes Muys, George Breitner, Kees van Dongen and Dolf Henkes. Their lives and work paint a picture of the history of Rotterdam. Artists Peter Koole, Anna Ramsair and Anton Vrede allow a glimpse into Rotterdam artists’ studios today. Artist interventions by Monika Dahlberg and André Smits offer a contemporary perspective on the collections and the city.
This exhibition was created as part of Boijmans Next Door and was made possible with the support of the Stichting Droom en Daad.
