Chinese Rotterdammers

As part of the “Echt Rotterdams Erfgoed” (Authentic Rotterdam Heritage) project, Museum Rotterdam – in tandem with Rotterdam residents - is trying to get a fix on who and what is currently all the rage around the city. This frequently sees us hit on Rotterdam topics and stories which we are keen to put in the limelight. We do so by way of special presentations under the header of the Museum Rotterdam Lab and by way of events at the museum or on-site.
The Chinese New Year celebrations to be held on 5 February 2019 – marking the start of the year of the pig – are a great opportunity to train the spotlight on the Chinese community in Rotterdam. Rotterdam-based Chinese artist Fen Mei (Echt Rotterdams Erfgoed no. 0020) is harnessing her roots to connect Rotterdammers with one another and with Chinese culture.
For Chinese Rotterdammers, which is currently running at the Museum Rotterdam Lab, she shines a light on our Rotterdam topics of Sport, Innovation, Cultures, Care, Work and Green, as viewed from the Chinese community’s perspective. A twenty-metre Chinese dragon costume from our historical collection twists and winds its way from topic to topic.
